Commonwealth Academy is a non-profit, tax-exempt, college preparatory day school governed by a voluntary Board of Trustees. The Board establishes policy, priorities, goals, and objectives about the school’s operation and future and reviews the budget and financial, admission, and development reports. In 2009, the Board crafted and adopted a five-year Strategic Plan that serves as the framework for the school’s progress. The plan outlines the Board’s vision of C/A as a model learning center for students in Grades 3–12 with AD/HD or learning differences. It includes key strategic priorities and specific initiatives required to fulfill the Board’s vision.

Although not involved in the actual governance of C/A, local businessmen and women volunteer as members of the C/A Advisory Council to offer support and advice as needed in matters of long-term planning such as the acquisition of properties and future expansion. The Council represents the base of C/A community support in the City of Alexandria.
