Susan J. Johnson, Ph.D. was appointed Head of School in 2002. During her tenure, C/A has grown from a dozen middle and high school students to over 130 students in Grades 3–12. With more than three decades of experience working with diverse learners as a teacher, administrator, psychologist, and educational diagnostician and consultant, Dr. Johnson is a sought-after speaker at educational seminars and has won numerous awards for her work. Most recently, Dr. Johnson received The Washington Post’s Distinguished Educational Leadership Award (2009–2010) and was named Educator of the Year by the Northern Virginia Chapter of CHADD (2010). It is Dr. Johnson’s unwavering belief that there is nothing wrong with children who have organizational, attention, or learning differences. It is the school environment that must adapt to these children. Dr. Johnson continually trains and inspires her staff in teaching methodologies that will benefit the auditory and visual learner, incorporating many kinesthetic and simulation exercises in classrooms with fewer than 10 students. Each day, Dr. Johnson empowers students to reach their highest achievement levels, reflective of the true potential, by teaching personal responsibility for learning and behavior in a comfortable community, conducive to academic risk-taking and social success.
Dr. Johnson earned a Master’s and Post-Master’s in Special Education/Learning Disabilities from the College of New Jersey and a Doctorate in Human Behavior from Newport University. Dr. Johnson is licensed by the State of Virginia in Administration and Supervision, Specific Learning Disabilities, and she is a licensed School Psychologist.
