HISTORY

Commonwealth Academy first opened its doors in the fall of 1997 in Fairfax County with just a handful of students. The school was born from the deep commitment and love of parents for their children, and their firm belief that regardless of learning differences, their children could be successful if the proper accommodations were available. By the spring of 2002, enrollment had grown to 37 students, and plans were made to move the school to its present location in the Del Ray community of Alexandria. The following fall, the then-new Head of School Susan Johnson opened the doors to welcome new and returning students to a bright, newly renovated 15,000 square foot facility.

Since then, enrollment has climbed steadily to its current level of more than 90 students. In 2007, the school added 5,000 square feet to accommodate up to 150 students. The space includes fully-equipped biology, chemistry, and physics labs, dedicated art and music rooms, as well as classrooms and social areas. Commonwealth attracts outstanding, dedicated faculty and a diverse group of committed parents. Technology upgrades are constant, with state-of-the-art computer labs and instructional technology. We continue to expand our curriculum, including honors courses, as well as electives and social opportunities for students and families. Graduating seniors are well prepared for post-high school challenges and are accepted at an ever-growing list of notable colleges and universities.

At the heart of Commonwealth’s success and impressive growth lies a steadfast commitment to its mission, visionary leadership by the Head of School and Board of Trustees, creative and accomplished faculty, an active and supportive parents association and perhaps most importantly, an unshakeable belief in the boundless potential of the students.
