There are many compelling reasons Commonwealth Academy attracts such exceptional and dedicated teachers and administrators. First and foremost is the immense satisfaction that stems from having a visible and major influence on each student’s academic future. We see gifted students who didn’t think they were smart reconnect with the joy of learning and successfully tackle new challenges. With classrooms limited to 10 students, teachers have the luxury of understanding how to build upon each student ’s strengths and how to best support any weaknesses. In short, they have the flexibility to give each student what he or she needs to be successful. The visionary leadership and mentoring provided by Head of School Susan Johnson gives teachers the freedom to explore new ideas and methods in teaching as well as new ways to utilize technology. Frequent faculty meetings allow continuous exchange about students’ accomplishments and a student-centered approach to teaching. Unlike many schools, Commonwealth believes students, regardless of learning differences, will best reach their potential and stay engaged when taught by subject-expert instructors at grade level. So, while several faculty members have had previous experience with LD or ADD/ADHD children, we recruit faculty based on experience in a specific field. Formal workshops during the summer, professional development days throughout the school year, and ad hoc exchanges are used to train these subject-experts in specific strategies and teaching styles proven successful for different types of learners. In this section of our website, you’ll find brief credentials for each of our faculty and staff, as well as an email directory. Each teacher also maintains an individual faculty web page to post syllabuses, homework assignments, and special course updates. |
