C/A’s Advisory Program is an essential component of student support. Upon entering High School, students are assigned an advisor with whom they will work throughout all four years in order to develop a close, long-term faculty-student relationship. Working in small groups, and individually, advisors help students manage academic concerns, serve as coaches to help develop organizational and study skills, and build positive relationships with their peers. Advisors are also the student’s primary advocate and liaison between home and school. As the advisor-advisee relationship deepens, students learn that they can turn to their advisor about any aspect of school life and receive support in a nurturing, caring atmosphere.
Advisory meetings are scheduled for ten minutes every morning. Time is spent supporting the development of organization and study skills and monitoring grades according to the following schedule:
Students also enjoy working together in their small advisory groups, or stretching themselves individually, to compete in monthly Advisory Challenges. Recent challenges have included door decorating contests, “name that tune” and “rock, paper, scissors” competitions, putting contests, and basketball shooting games.
