CLUBS AND TRIPS

A variety of extracurricular activities are available in the form of clubs, field trips, and extended trips to give students a chance for fellowship, leadership, and teamwork.

Clubs
Club offerings are established based on interest; the more popular clubs include Bowling, Basketball Team, Golfing, Horseback Riding,
Rock Climbing, Swimming, Movie Club, and Yearbook.  At least one faculty advisor is assigned to each club. Due to the nature of the activities, many clubs take place off-campus. The Basketball teams will practice at the brand new Charles Houston Recreational Center in Alexandria. The swimming club meets at the YMCA, a block away from Commonwealth. Rock climbing, bowling, golf and others take place at appropriate facilities; in cooperation with our parents association, the school provides transportation.

Clubs meet weekly on Wednesday afternoons from 2 pm – 3:40 pm; off campus clubs may return closer to 4 pm.   Middle schoolers can leave at their usual departure time, or stay for the duration of the club meeting. Middle school students can change their club choice once each quarter, high school students can change at the end of each semester.  High school students will have the opportunity to earn credits for specific clubs. For example, if a member of the high school Basketball team remains on the team for the entire school year, he/she can earn 0.5 PE credit for the year.  This holds true for Bowling, Rock Climbing, and Golfing. Similarly, a student who participates in the Photography or Art club for the year can earn 0.5 Fine Arts credit for the year. At the beginning of the school year, a student can decide if a club will be taken for course credit. Not all clubs earn credit.

Trips
During the first few weeks of school, students enjoy team building trips and activities as new students are welcomed into each grade. Field trips are scheduled throughout the year to complement science, history, and English classes. Students visit the Holocaust Museum, WW II Memorial, Congress, the Supreme Court, the Inner Harbor, the Air and Space Museum, and an overnight to Philadelphia, to name just a few. Other trips, more social in nature, are also planned for the year, including a Senior overnight in the spring.
