Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

You are you. There are no boxes you need to check or fit into. - Anabelle C. Morgan, Head of School

Celebrating Exactly Who You Are

At Commonwealth Academy, we know that every member of our community is unique in more than one way. We believe this uniqueness is worthy and deserving of respect, celebration, safety, care, awareness, and dignity. We also believe in celebrating our community members for exactly who they are and maintaining an environment where they can thrive and experience joy.

Commonwealth Academy remains committed to building a student and faculty body that reflects the diversity of our vibrant community through strategic outreach and reflective growth.

Commonwealth Academy believes in embracing the power of neurodivergent brains and destigmatizing learning differences. Our Advisory program emphasizes the importance of each student learning about their own brain development and educational needs to develop their self-advocacy and sense of empowerment. Students learn about famous important figures with similar learning profiles who show that some of our most creative and innovative thinkers share commonalities. We also recognize how learning challenges are just one component of a person’s identity, and intersect to create a unique whole.

Commonwealth Academy seeks to uphold and promote anti-racist principles through regular review of the curriculum, professional development, and staff book study. The office of the Director of Studies partners with Department Chairs to ensure class content meets standards for cultural relevance and ability to provide “windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors” (Rudine Sims Bishop) for different perspectives.

Teachers undertake frequent additional learning around racial identity formation, facilitating difficult conversations in the classroom, and implicit bias. Further,Commonwealth Academy is committed to promoting STEAM participation for underrepresented communities through robust course offerings and auxiliary programs.

We partner with our parent community through education sessions on important topics and hold listening sessions in response to stakeholder needs and concerns. Past sessions have covered anti-racist parenting, youth racial identity formation, and online safety.
