Summer

Algebra I

Summer 2024 Sessions:

  • 06/17/2024 - 07/19/2024

  • M - F, 8:15 AM - 1:00 PM

One-credit course. No prerequisite. In addition to the days off for the holidays on Wednesday, June 19 and Thursday, July 4, this class will also not meet on Friday, July 5.

Algebra I is a one-credit course designed to teach the topics in a typical first-year algebra course. Topics include solving linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, as well as equations involving rational and radical expressions. Function notation is introduced and various classifications of functions are explored. Topics from coordinate geometry include graphing linear and quadratic functions; graphing inequalities; and applications of the Pythagorean Theorem, the distance formula, and special right triangles. Students will learn how to solve systems of linear equations and inequalities, as well as 3-variable and nonlinear systems.

Algebra II

Summer 2024 Sessions:

  • 06/17/2024 - 07/19/2024

  • M - F, 8:15 AM - 1:00 PM

One-credit course. No prerequisite. In addition to the days off for the holidays on Wednesday, June 19 and Thursday, July 4, this class will also not meet on Friday, July 5.

Algebra II is a one-credit course that is an extension of Algebra I. Topics are added in the area of functions that expand the algebra to include conic sections and trigonometry, thus relating algebra to geometric concepts. Algebra II is generally preliminary to a course in analysis, analytical geometry, and ideas of limits and calculus. This course also ties together many of the ideas from arithmetic and geometry. Students who have successfully completed this course will be able to identify and perform diverse mathematical concepts in the field of algebra. Students must have successfully completed Algebra I, with Geometry strongly recommended, in order to take this class.

GEOMETRY

An In-Depth Overview of Geometry Terms and Formulas

Summer 2024 Sessions:

  • 06/17/2024 - 07/19/2024
  • 8:15 a.m. - 1 p.m.

One Credit Course. Prerequisite: Algebra I. In addition to the days off for the holidays on Wednesday, June 19th and Thursday, July 4th, this class will also not meet on Friday, July 5th.

The Geometry course includes an in-depth analysis of plane, solid, and coordinate geometry as they relate to both abstract mathematical concepts as well as real-world problem situations.

Students will focus on the properties of lines and angles. They will perform translations and apply theorems to shapes. Students will forge connections between mathematical topics and gain many powerful tools to help negotiate logic problems and proofs, all of which will improve problem-solving skills. Students will also study the properties of polygons, circles, and three-dimensional figures. They'll apply theorems and trigonometric ratios to shapes and discover how relevant geometry is to everyday life by exploring practical applications.

Starting this summer, our multi-activity day camp formerly known as Camp Cougar will be a screen-free environment, with the exception of a movie being played during lunch. Commonwealth Explorer Camp is a fun-filled camp that allows the campers to give input to mapping out each camp day. Campers will start each day with outdoor activities at Simpson Park and then return to campus for lunch and indoor activities in the afternoon. The gym will be available for use during the entire camp day to offer more opportunities for sports and physical activity. Campers can choose between: sports, arts and crafts, theater, biking, board/card games, chess, gardening, music/dance, cooperative Games, Lego Building Competitions, and our school-wide hide-and-seek game to end the week has become a camper favorite.

Commonwealth Academy alumnus and current D1 athlete, Andrei Cook, will be leading the sports options through each camp day and CA's theater teacher, Ms. Hoppe, will be leading theater activities in the afternoons such as radio theatre, voice recording, scene play, and drama games. The week will provide the opportunity for exposure to many different activities that provide opportunities for learning in a fun way. Character development and skill acquisition will be achieved through activities that campers self-select. Camper preference and our nurturing CA staff make this exciting week an experience that will be remembered!
